About Me

November 1, 2009

Although Bobbi Gray was born and raised in Pasadena, California, she learned at an early age to love and appreciate her Lunenburg, Nova Scotia roots. As both her parents grew up in Massachusetts, the Gray family drove east every two years for extended family visits. Bobbi remembers as a very young child sitting under her Great-Uncle Alex’s chair, listening to her Grandpa Corkum and his brothers Alex and John telling tales of life “down east”. Being descended from some seventeen of the original Lunenburg families, they were related to most of the people in Pleasantville, Nova Scotia, where they grew up. Unfortunately, Bobbi can no longer recall any of the stories she heard during those times, but she remembers the sense of love for family, home and Lunenburg that those tales instilled within her. Many years later Bobbi feels that the early exposure to those family stories was the foundation of her 40 year addiction to genealogy and family history.

After graduating from Brigham Young University Bobbi moved to Alberta, Canada. She now lives in Sherwood Park, Alberta where she spends time not only on her own research but also helping many friends with their family lines. She is the mother of four and grandmother of nine. Recently her oldest daughter and family moved from Sherwood Park to Fall River, Nova Scotia, giving her a sense of "going home".

I just wanted to email you about your book. It was fabulous! Very good detail! I almost cried. I can't wait to read your second book that you've written!!!!!
Karly, Fall River, Nova Scotia (age 12)

I was finally able to sit down and read your book. I could not put it down!! I thoroughly enjoyed the read! I cried, laughed, and made mental notes to express consistent gratitude to those ancestors of ours who suffered so much so that we can be where we are today! So . . . when are you writing a sequel?!!
Etta, Edmonton, Alberta

I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed your book – in fact I read it in two days. Although I had some idea of the hardships our ancestors lived your book gave me much greater insight into the daily trials and the great reliance on a strong faith to see them through such difficult times. You must enjoy tracing your roots to such hardy people. Congratulations on a very fine book!
Frank Stowe, Vermont

I just finished your most wonderful book. Once I started reading it, I didn’t want to put it down. I lived through every moment of the hardships, joys and sorrows of those brave settlers. I loved the letters of Katarina and Peter, and their love story, and the events brought the history alive. WELL DONE, Bobbi!! I look forward to your next book.
Betty, Bridgewater, Nova Scotia

"I'm pretty much hooked on this Lunenburg Letters stuff. Congrats, you made me cry."
Arlene, Carstairs, Alberta

"It's an epic! The story of the Lunenburg settlers is intriguing in itself, but by linking lives in 18th-century Nova Scotia and Pennsylvania, the book refreshes our imaginative understanding of history. And the characters are our guides to making it real."
Janet, Lumberton, New Jersey

"I found myself falling into the book, being a part of it. I put myself in their shoes through the experience of creating a whole new life. They took a huge leap of faith.
Gudrun, Winnipeg, Manitoba

I am reading your book right now. In the two days I have read 50 pages. I am so addicted to the book. It is sooooooo good.

The year is 1750, and the British Government is recruiting 'Foreign Protestants' to settle in the new world. The Mattern and Hess families have farmed together, and faced poverty and religious persecution together, in their small village in the German Palatinate. When they hear of the promise to live in peace and religious freedom, and own their own land, they are immediately attracted to the idea. It isn’t long before they have signed up for the long trip to Nova Scotia – much to the dismay of two of the children.

Peter Hess and Katarina Mattern have been the best of friends since childhood. Now, as young adults, they have found their friendship maturing into something more. They decide to wait until their arrival in Nova Scotia to obtain permission from Katarina's parents to marry. But, in spite of the best intentions, and the most careful planning, the families are separated before their journey even begins. Each family is faced with decisions that will affect them for the rest of their lives. Go to Nova Scotia as originally planned? Head for Pennsylvania and the promise of even greater prosperity? And what about Peter and Katarina? Will they ever see each other again?
